Last night, the Mountain Pointe Boys Basketball Team closed out a dominant performance in the Welcome to the Jungle Thanksgiving Tournament, with a 84-59 win over Westview in the championship game. The win pushed the Pride to 4-0 on the season, and was their second win against an opponent ranked higher than them in the pre-season poll; Westview was ranked 4th. “Rankings are good for talking points, but games are to be played, not talked about.” Eason said. The Pride did a ton of playing last night.
The defense and offense was clicking on all cylinders throughout the game; including a 27-7 first quarter explosion. Jalen Graham led the way with 9 points in the first. The second quarter was led by Amarion Cash, who dropped in 10 of the teams 20 points; and the Pride took a 47-27 lead into the half. It was more of the same in the second half, as Cash and Ryan Pate split 12 of the Pride’s 17 in the quarter. In the fourth, all but 4 of the boys scored, closing the game with their 20 point quarter. “It’s great to see the offense playing so well, but I don’t want these guys forgetting that defense is going to make us.” Eason explains. “We want to hold teams to 10 points a quarter, and tonight we allowed 20, 15, and 16. That’s unacceptable for our defensive expectations.”
Overall, the Pride had a great tournament; and despite his never satisfied mantra, Coach Eason admitted they looked good. “I was proud of the boys. They played to the level I expect; and the results were positive.” Individually, Graham took home the tournament MVP trophy and Khalid Price made the all-tournament team.
Next Week is a busy week for the Pride, as they take on Brophy Tuesday, Bolder Creek Thursday, and Valley Vista Friday (the home opener). Hope to see you there.
